Not all funeral directors in Melbourne are the same

There are broadly three types of operators — and the differences are worth understanding before you decide.

Large & corporate

The biggest funeral homes in Melbourne are publicly listed businesses running 20 or more locations across the state — including White Lady Funerals, Le Pine Funerals and Tobin Brothers Funerals. Whilst established and well-known, prices tend to be higher and the experience more transactional and old fashioned.

Independent & family-run

Smaller independent funeral homes are typically family owned. You’ll usually deal directly with the owner, which makes for a more personal experience — generally at a lower price than the larger corporates funeral businesses.

Modern & memorial-style

A growing number of Australian families have moved away from the traditional format entirely, focusing on memorial services, natural burials or alternative ceremonies. Tomorrow is the first funeral business in Australia to focus exclusively on a direct cremation paired with a personal ‘celebration of life’ ceremony.

How much does a funeral cost in Melbourne?

We believe in complete transparency when it comes to our funeral package. Here’s an honest breakdown of what to expect.

Direct cremation

In Melbourne, direct cremations typically cost between $3,000 and $5,000. At Tomorrow, our Cremation & Paperwork package is our most affordable option. When you notify us that a death has occurred, we will arrange to collect your loved one and transfer them into our care. We will carefully wash their body, always treating them with the utmost respect. They will then be transferred to a local crematorium in Victoria and the ashes are returned within about a week. We manage all of the paperwork and lodge the death at Births Deaths & Marriages, Victoria and order a death certficate. Any memorial arrangements are yours to organise. At Tomorrow, we charge $3,600 for this service.

Full-service funeral

With larger corporate funeral business, costs increase quickly once coffin upgrades, flowers and other extras are added — ranging from around $6,000 to $30,000 or more. The average cost of a funeral in Melbourne is around $11,000. If you’re choosing burial over cremation, a burial plot can add another $10,000 on top of that.

The Tomorrow package

We ensure our complete funeral package has transparent pricing at $7,200. This includes everything you need to farewell your person in a very personal way: cremation, transfers, eco-friendly coffin, all paperwork, a celebrant, tribute video, order of service design, a memorial website and a bound life-story picture book. No upgrades. No surprises.

Traditional funeral or memorial — what’s the difference?

The key difference is timing. A traditional funeral holds the ceremony before the burial or cremation. A memorial funeral holds the ceremony after.

A traditional format makes sense if there’s a specific religious process to follow, or if having a coffin on display is important to you. But if neither of those elements matter, a memorial-style service is worth considering.

By removing the need for a coffin at the ceremony, the whole farewell becomes more personal, more flexible and more cost-effective. Your budget goes towards food, beverages, venue styling and music — rather than coffin handles and funeral director extras. You’re also free to choose any venue that suits your loved one’s life, rather than being limited to a chapel.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a direct cremation?

A direct cremation is a simple cremation without a funeral service beforehand. It includes collection, paperwork and cremation, giving families the option to hold a separate, private memorial entirely in their own time and on their own terms.

What does a funeral director do?

A funeral director manages the entire process — collecting your loved one, handling all government paperwork and death certificates, preparing the body for cremation or burial, and organising and delivering the funeral ceremony.

Where do cremations take place in Melbourne?

In Victoria, cremations must be performed at a government-run cemetery. Your funeral director manages all bookings and communications on your behalf. Tomorrow works across all major Victorian crematoriums including Springvale Botanical Cemetery, Fawkner Memorial Park, Bunurong Memorial Park and more.

Who will I deal with during the process?

With Tomorrow, your celebrant takes the role of main point of contact throughout. They’ll get to know your loved one’s story, help design the most suitable memorial event and guide you through the entire process from start to finish.
