Life & Death, Today & Tomorrow – Tim Bryant on Losing Eleanor & Raising Their Kids Alone

‘Life & Death, Today & Tomorrow’ by Kate Morgan. It’s a space where we tell the stories of our beloved clients and co-workers in the death space. We’re working on a volume of interviews that aim to inspire, advocate and support. (Watch Chapter Five HERE)

– CHAPTER FIVE –

Tim’s Story

This is why Tomorrow exists. Sharing stories is at the heart of our Tomorrow Memorials.

Tim’s Story: Eleanor Bryant’s Husband Speaks: Sudden Loss, Grief & Raising Our Kids Alone

Eleanor Bryant had always put others first: a devoted wife and mother, a skilled speech pathologist, and a fierce advocate for children in rural communities. On 11 November 2024, when an out-of-control truck ploughed into a preschool playground in Riddells Creek, Eleanor spent her final moments pushing young children out of its path. She was 43. She left behind her husband Tim, an 11-year-old son, and a 9-year-old daughter.

The Phone Call

Tim received the news the way no one ever should; a call from police, mid-afternoon, that split his life into before and after. And there was something that couldn’t wait. His children needed to know. He had to be the one to tell them.

Telling the Children

How do you tell an 11-year-old and a 9-year-old that their mum has died? There is no script for this. In one of the most quietly devastating parts of this conversation, Tim describes finding a way to say the unsayable, with love, honesty, and a steadiness that can only come from someone holding their family together in the worst moment of their lives.

Positive Grieving

What sets Tim’s story apart is the philosophy he has chosen to carry his family through loss. Tim speaks about positive grieving; the belief that grief doesn’t have to be hidden or rushed through, but leaned into honestly, together, as a family. Eleanor’s warmth and generosity have become the blueprint for how he approaches each day. Grief, for Tim, is not the opposite of living. It is part of it.

Keeping Eleanor Alive at Home

Eleanor is a constant, welcome presence in their home, her name spoken freely around the dinner table, her colourful wardrobe preserved for their daughter to discover one day. These are not acts of being unable to move forward. They are acts of love. Tim describes it as moving forward.. not moving on. The distinction matters enormously.

Community, Connection & the Palais

In the aftermath, the Riddells Creek community rallied in a way that clearly moved Tim deeply. Eleanor’s memorial was held at the iconic Palais Theatre in St Kilda, a fitting tribute to a woman whose impact extended far beyond her community. Tomorrow Funerals was honoured to care for Eleanor and support her family through that time.

Eleanor’s Legacy: The Eleanor Bryant Memorial Fund

In Eleanor’s honour, The Eleanor Bryant Memorial Fund was established to support the next generation of paediatric allied health professionals through scholarships, training, and mentorship in rural and remote communities. The Fund is hosting an inaugural Bush Summit in Coonamble in June 2026, and every donation helps ensure Eleanor’s legacy lives on in the communities she loved.

Eleanor’s legacy is not just her story. It’s every child in a rural community who gets the support they need.
