Richard Norton

06.01.1950 – 30.03.2025

On behalf of Richard’s wife, Judy, and the extended family, we announce the sudden death of a much-loved Australian Martial Artist and Actor, Richard Norton.

A private family event will be held to honour an incredible man who had such a huge heart and shared a special and close bond with his mother, Linda and soul mate, Judy. Richard’s love and support was also shared by the rest of his family.

Richard was one in a million, he gave so much to an industry, its people, and indeed the world through fitness training, personal security, appearances, demonstrations, workshops, choreography and acting. His sense of humour and innate ability to connect with people forming deep and sincere friendships, were part of what enabled him to achieve so much.

The imprint he has left on people’s lives – will live on forever.

Guestbook

This website can be used to remember Richard Norton. Please leave your sentiments, a tribute, your fondest memories in the below Guestbook.

With our Thanks, Judy, and Richard’s family thanks you for your generosity in grieving our loss, and for your sincerity in your compassion and comforting words and memories.

A life well lived…

It is with great honour and, with broken hearts, that we share memories of Richard’s life.

Richard had an incredible life doing what he loved with his martial arts, his commitment to practice and dedication enabling him to pursue his life’s passion.

Richard always found the time for people who reached out to him, he never seemed to mind what they did or who they were, he was always open to those whose paths he crossed. Richard spent the time getting to know the people he worked with. He held several martial arts accolades and achievements in a range of styles and forms.

He landed a job as bodyguard to the Rolling Stones during the band’s first Australian tour and experienced his first brush with the demands of global celebrity. Richards competency attracted a dazzling roster of other clientèle including James TaylorABBAFleetwood MacDavid Bowie, John Belushi and Linda Ronstadt. Linda invited him to California as her bodyguard following her 1978 Australian and Japan Tour. There are many images of Richard working out with the bands. It was often said that the band members were fitter at the end of the tour – than at the beginning – thanks to the rigorous training.

With the world opening up for him, Richard worked alongside other greats including Chuck Norris, Jackie Chan and Sammo Kam-Bo-Hung in several films from The Octagon in 1980 to Force Five the following year when he caught the attention of Jackie Chan, being cast in three of Jackie’s highly charged Hong Kong action epics, Twinkle, Twinkle Lucky Stars (1985), Millionaires’ Express (1986) and City Hunter (1993). Other Hong Kong-based productions included the comedic cult favourite Madam City Hunter (1993) and the darker, Mr Nice Guy (1997).

On top of this, over the span of his life, Richard worked in about one hundred films, and continued to receive film offers throughout early 2025.

Richard loved nurturing the younger generation and embracing individual development and growth helping prepare them to find their own path.

His personal goal was to continue to seek growth through knowledge.

Throughout all of his professional endeavours, achieved with the support of his wife Judy, he found a life balance which helped Richard enjoy and devote himself to his close knit family and friends. Richard always felt life was about the personal interactions with people, not just about the job, the training and the outcomes.

Richard passed away on Sunday 30 March in hospital in Melbourne, Victoria. His wife Judy and the family were by his side.

He leaves behind the love of his life Judy, his twin sister Pam, and older brother Adriaan. Richard had a way about him that was precious and memorable, he never lost his sense of humour and he never settled for mediocrity – he always encouraged others to do the same.

Rest in Peace Richard Norton.

Only after hearing about Chuck Norris demise did I find myself revisiting memories of the stars who shaped my childhood here in Kenya. In doing so, I discovered that another legend I grew up watching and admiring had quietly passed on last year. The joy and laughter Richard brought into my life and into so many homes in our humble neighborhood was truly unmatched.May he continue to rest in eternal peace, and may his family find lasting comfort in knowing how deeply he touched our lives.

  • John Mills says:

Much Honor and Respect! Always courteous, friendly, expressed himself truly, example and honorful! He will be missed and set the bar high! He was a forever a student and a master! May the Holy Spirit comfort his family and friends during this time of sorrow.

Friend, Colleague, mentor and with a sense of humour that made the room smile. I haven’t written anything until now, but our whole family’s heart go out to Judy and Richard’s family and friends. I was honoured to work beside him for a number of years. When I was a young martial artist I used to read about his thoughts and beliefs in training and they always made sense to me. Who would have thought that many years later we would be making movies together. He was a gentleman, and an all round top man. We were all very fortunate to have walked some of life’s path alongside him. He will always be missed. Sending love to you Judy. Greg, Deb, Mace and Maya

  • Stephen Bristow says:

Just like to say goodbye to a good bloke. I was always proud to call him a friend before he moved to the USA.
I sat down with Richard in the Ceylon tea centre on Collin’s Street and discussed if he should take the opportunity presented to him to move to America. I know he had the same talk with Bob Jones and probably many others. I guess we all said ….go.

  • Timothy Beql says:

I really miss Richard. Such a great guy. He genuinely cared about others which is a very rare trait in today’s world. Richard would always be there to lift you up through encouragement and motivation. I’m so happy that after a decade speaking with him on social media that I finally met him and Judy. They came to my office in Mid February , and then we went out to eat. A few days later I had invited Richard and Judy to one of my clients film premieres. We were in the midst of working on Richard’s autobiographical book , which I hope and pray we can someday finish to honor him and his legacy. We were making plans on working together. Love ya and miss you Richard. RIP my friend. Prayers sent out to Judy and your entire family.

  • Ali Kadhim says:

“It’s not the 2 hours on the mat that matters most as a Martial Artist, it’s the 22 hours off that mat. When you don’t wear your gi and your colors, what then? How do you really behave that says that you’re a Martial Artist through and through?” A quote I will never forget from your interview with Richlife Projects. It was truly such an absolute pleasure and honour learning from you and working with you for that moment in time on Furiosa, you have inspired a whole generation and so many more to come. I wish your wife Judy and your family great strength, and may you rest easy in the next life big brother. Osssuu 🤲🏽🕊️

  • sifu Simon Pedelty says:

A gentleman ,generous with his time and knowledge. I privilege to have crossed your path Richard Norton 🩵🙏🤛

  • Jan Simpson says:

Last month, we lost not just a legendary martial artist, actor, and stuntman, but a true gentleman: Richard Norton.

For so many of us, Richard was more than just a familiar face in countless action films — he was a symbol of strength, skill, and genuine kindness. I grew up watching his movies, admiring his charisma and talent from afar. Never did I imagine that one day I would have the honor of meeting him in person.

That opportunity came on the set of Cynthia Rothrock’s film Black Creek, where Richard’s warmth and generosity left a lasting impression on everyone present. Despite his legendary status, he greeted everyone with humility and grace, always taking time to encourage and inspire. Later, seeing him again at the Black Creek premiere in Los Angeles this past October was a full-circle moment — a reminder of how deeply he touched lives both on and off the screen.

Richard’s legacy is not only in the films he made or the martial arts he mastered but in the way he made people feel seen, valued, and motivated. His spirit will continue to inspire all who admired him, and he will be missed more than words can say.

Rest easy, Richard. Thank you for everything.

  • Trevor T says:

I was very fortunate to have met Richard in 1972 when I joined Zen Do Kai at the Honbu dojo in Elizabeth St. I would not be able to join his classes till I received my green belt but had watched him do several demos and partake in all the high grade ni Dan gradings and was in awe of his tremendous speed power and accuracy. The first public demo I saw was when Richard would suspend himself with his heels on one chair and his neck and head on another chair. Then two big muscly guys would carry o a huge boulder place it on his stomach and both proceed with sledge hammers to smash the rock to bits. I was so amazed.

Once a green belt I would have to travel to Croydon twice a week where Richard taught only and twice a night still at the Honbu dojo.
Here I would get to know Richard the martial artist and the humbleness and amicable nature that he always exuded.

He was truly gifted in the martial arts. A born natural and had an uncanny ability to remember techniques from past to present including all forms of weaponry. Therefore I was curious and had to ask him where to get time to train when you’re working full time at the immigration department and teaching at nights. He replied with a chuckle “amongst the rubbish cans at home “

Of course such talent cannot be confined to one city and after his last demo in Melbourne was witnessed by Chuck Norris, Richard would spread his wings and use his technical ability and charisma (and also through Bob Jones’s promotion in the personal bodyguard business) to entertain the world through so many enjoyable movies. Here he would make long lasting friends from across the globe.

Richard lived life to the full. He achieved so much doing with what he loved doing.

    He will be greatly missed.

Condolences to his family and heartfelt sympathy to Judy.
Sending love and light to all.

  • Zak Shaffer says:

Richard wasn’t just a hero of mine he was my friend. I’ll cherish and never forget the times he and Judy shared with my wife Kristen and son Bodhi at our home. Richard teaching my (at the time 5 year old) son “how to cut a man” with Bodhi’s play sword. Or the many candid stories he’d share about his time in front of the camera. Richard’s kindness shined bright and his beautiful relationship with Judy was remarkable. I’ll miss Richard’s texts, calls, & visits. The sky just earned a truly bright star. Kristen, Bodhi, and I send all our love to you Judy.

  • Dana Stamos, USAdojo.com and MartialArtsEntertainment.com says:

Richard was as humble as he was incredible at everything he did. I remember going to Mr. Norris’ events and getting to spend time with Richard and Judy and Richard always gave so much to those of us who may not have been great martial artists, but he knew we loved the arts and he cultivated that love. Judy was so supportive and my heart breaks that she and Richard are separated.

I am sending so much love to you, Judy, and I will always be here for you. Love you,

  • Con and Maryanne Lazos says:

Dear Richard it was my honour to become your Team Norton Black belt in Bjj but daily it was an honour to know you. You inspire the best in everyone you meet and certainly did that for my family and our business.
You’re a gift to the world and without realising you were a dad to many who needed a father figure like you.
You’re still more than inspiring through your movies and your lessons.
You always gave credit to those who taught you and I’ll be doing the same for what you’ve taught me.
Thanks for creating Team Norton Bjj. We are proud to hold the name up and be proud to represent you.
Thank you for all the great laughs and banter. I wish I did more of it with you.
Maryanne and I will continue to have you in our hearts.

  • Karen Fukuhara says:

Richard welcomed me with a warm smile and open arms on the set of Suicide Squad. He taught me how to wield a katana and was extremely patient with me throughout our training. However, he wasn’t just a sensei to me. I loved who he was as a person, how he lived his life, how he could find the balance of cracking jokes whilst carrying the seriousness of our shared martial art. As a wrap gift, I gave him my Katana mask from filming to show my gratitude. I owe so much of my character building of “Katana” to him. The news of his death is extremely shocking…at this time I can only remember his big smile and tight hugs. Rest in Paradise Richard, thank you. My condolences to Judy, his close friends & family. <3

  • Simon Downie says:

What a legend, what a legacy. Your name will live forever Richard. Fly high my friend.

  • Ramesh Patel says:

REST IN POWER GREAT WARRIOR, SCHOLAR, ICON AND TRUE GENTLEMAN 😔! The devastating and shocking news that Soke Richard Norton passed away still hurts. To say he was a top tier or even high level martial artist would be rude and a massive understatement and would be a disservice to him. During his life he trained with many of the greats and had a massive impact himself on the global martial arts world, in turn becoming one of the greats. He truly embodied the martial way not only by his skills but also his morals. He was a humble man considering the phenomenal life he had led. His cinematic life is one that’s spans decades that have seen him share the screen with some of the greats, Jackie Chan being my personal favourite, he has been in Oscar winning films and trained many of the worlds most famous actors. His knowledge in the film business was invaluable and all that worked with him were elevated in their performances. Even with this out of this world martial arts and cinematic life that he lived it was his true love Judy that shined the brightest. I witnessed the deepest love he had for his wife Judy that was inspiring and amazing to see when they were together. I can only offer my deepest of condolences to you Judy and the family and share our thoughts and prayers for you and the family. This was not a day I was expecting… to the greatest of warriors – “A great soul serves everyone all the time. A great soul never dies it brings us together again and again (Maya Angelou). Your friend, Sifu Ramesh Patel 🙏😔

  • Aaron Giorno says:

    Dear Judy and family.
It’s sad that we only have words at this time to try to convey a worthy message to you all when in so many ways they just wont do justice. Richards was a life well lived, an open book for all to read in motion, a word, a line, a paragraph or chapter, with very few sharing in his library of life.
Richards passing has left a space on this earth that will not be filled, but was never supposed to be, thus recognise the true beauty of his being.
A warrior with a kind heart, a man of action with good intention, a balanced weight on the pendulum of time and a true explorer on the winds of this world. Of all the stories I heard of Richard, the one I believe was most important to him was how he loved and protected Judy.
Judy, thank you for the fruitcake, it was certainly the nicest fruite cake I have ever had. I can only imagine how he was needed in the heavens more than he was now on earth, but it must be so, and as it is.
    A quick poem.
To this life adventure found, this story done Valhalla bound.
    To Richard, rest in peace.
To Judy, live until you meet again.
Love and sincere condolences, The Giorno Family.

  • Chris Masters Mah... says:

    Chris Masters Mah here…

This passing hit the hardest for me in the past year.

A friend of Richard’s, albeit I’m sure Not as close as 1000 (or 10,000) people are, Richard has impacted my life, and I wanted to reach out to share my love & support…

Richard, as big as he is, has the heart to support and raise up talent from the grassroot….

I remember in about 2013, our mutual friend Jet Tranter and I organised a short film / action piece to create an action showreel, and Jet brought Richard on to run some exercises and drills, and share his wisdom…

He was gracious with his time, and inspiring…

I remember at the change room, he took off his shirt, and for 60 something year old (at the time) with white hair, he had a better body than most 30 year olds… ✨😄😄

And I said, “I want THAT body when I’m in my 60s!” 😄😄

The following year, I invited him for a coffee ☕ which he graciously accepted to catch up & listen to a pitch I had…

I wanted to find a way to work with him again, and cast him in a short film…

While the concept didn’t come to completion, it was so lovely to catch up with Richard nonetheless… ✨🤍

He shared stories in our catch ups of the behind-the-scenes processes of Mad Max: Fury Road, how each punch is something from, whether a reaction or from hunger cos the character hasn’t eaten lunch, and Max’s pursuers lived in their cars and has to know them intimately, where they hide their toothbrush in it… That level of detail.

I love that sort of thing as a Working Actor… Depth & detail.

** I’ve experienced losing my former love of my life 12 years ago — while each relationship is different, I’m intimate with the grieving process…

We can never “get over”, we can only move thru…

I want to extend my love & support —

Anything I can do to serve & support you, Judy, in this time, please let us know.

(And if there is nothing but just to be present with each other & share stories, keeping the man alive in our thoughts…

    I’m here for you…)

My heart goes out to Judy & Richard’s close family and friends, he is survived by.

We as human beings die two deaths — one in the physical, and one when our loved ones speak our name the last time…

Thank you for letting me Celebrate his life with you, and keep his memory alive… ✨💜🙏🏼

May we always speak his name, forever & ever. ✨🤍🙏🏼

Rest in Power, Richard Norton… ✨👊🏻🤜🏻🤛🏻

  • Andrew Ward says:

    Rest in peace Richard Norton.
Sending the deepest condolences to you Judy and family.
One moment he is filming with Chuck Norris, next minute taking the time to chat and inspire me, a slightly lost 18 year old on a weekly basis back 35 years ago.
I still and will always proudly claim that I knew Richard Norton and his gorgeous wife Judy Green. And I will always remember him. And you Judy.
Find some solace in the fact so many people love you both.

  • Gwen Crawford says:

There are celebrities. People who are the ‘it’ person for ‘whatever reason’.

Then there are people we truly celebrate, because they are good people, who dedicate themselves to something, and inspire others to find their path. Richard was certainly in this category. He had a gift for making people think, and for setting the example in terms of personal authenticity. His performances on film were always good… that shows a lot about his willingness to work with people and leave things better for him having been involved. I review the comments here, and it’s easy to see, that he did the same in life. To leave people and situations better than he found them.

That’s speaks to the measure of the man… a man full of love, and kindness. Our world was blessed to have him among us.

My heart goes out to his beloved Judy, and to all those who knew him personally.

  • Scott Kelley says:

When I first met Richard I must admit I was star struck but after getting to know him I quickly realised that he was a true gentleman with a wicked sense of humour and knowledge that he was more than willing to share. He will definitely be missed

  • Mark Stas says:

As I stand in reflection today, my heart is filled with both sadness and deep gratitude. When I was a teenager and martial arts first became a profound passion in my life, I still remember watching Richard Norton on screen—an incredible presence in so many iconic films. But it was his performance in Gymkata that left a lasting mark on me when I was a kid. The way he moved—his physical mastery, his presence—ignited something powerful within me.
Those moments of inspiration, captured in the eyes of a young martial artist, have never faded. Time may fly, but the fire he sparked helped my own passion grow, guiding me on the path of martial arts and action cinema.
Richard, thank you. Thank you for the inspiration, for the example, and for being a light to so many of us. Your legacy lives on in the hearts, the punches, the kicks, and the dreams of generations you inspired.
    Rest in power,

  • Tony Lu says:

In Deep Mourning for a Respected Martial Arts Master — Richard Norton. The news of his sudden passing is both shocking and heartbreaking. Richard was not only a legendary figure in the martial arts world, but also a role model in the hearts of many. Throughout his life, he embodied the true spirit of perseverance and discipline that defines martial arts. Whether in the ring or on screen, he demonstrated unparalleled professionalism and passion. His movements were crisp and precise, his style a perfect blend of strength and grace. As a friend and mentor, Richard was generous and humble. He always took the time to patiently guide the next generation, selflessly sharing his experience and wisdom. Through both word and action, he passed down not just martial skills, but also the values of respect, dedication, and loyalty. On the silver screen, he left us with countless unforgettable moments. Every appearance was a tribute to the art of martial combat. His presence was an irreplaceable part of that golden era of action cinema. Now he is gone, but his voice, his smile, and his spirit remain with us. Richard’s love for martial arts and the inspiration he brought to the world will forever be etched in our hearts. May he rest in peace. May there be a world of martial arts waiting for him in heaven.

  • Liana Emmerson says:

When I was a teen, new to martial arts, unfamiliar with myself and struggling with confidence, Richard arrived in my life. He approached me as he approached everyone, expecting everyone to fall into stride with him, stepping into greatness. He saw striving to be better as inherent to living, and made it feel like falling into step with him was easy. To have that sort of subtle mentorship helped me give permission to the drive and agency in me, and to grow into a confident adult. His honest approach to life and people meant he always made me feel like dignity, courage, trying again and standing in my power could be as easy as breathing. I know the ripples of his loss will be felt for so many, but for me I wanted to so much more time to make him proud. Knowing him was a gift that changed my life. I hope I can fall into stride with him again, and do my best to pass that gift on.

  • Stuart Smith says:

I was honoured and extremely privileged to meet Richard on 3 occasions.1st was in LA many years ago. I was invited to his 25 yrs in showbiz dinner via ‘Screen Power ” magazine. After meeting both Richard and Judy I was overwhelmed and so happy to have met them both. Chuck and Cynthia were supposed to present their stories and events throughout the years working and knowing Richard. Unfortunately hurricane”Rita” closed Dallas airport and Chuck wasn’t able to make the trip. However Cynthia gave extremely moving and funny experience’s they had working together. The next morning we trained at Cynthias dojo in LA. Because I was the only one in the group who had studied the arts and wearing a GI. Richard used me as his occi.(Might be spelt wrong!). What an honour that was. After remaining friends from then I was so fortunate to meet him again in Berlin. Again he used me as his training partner within our group. Unbelievable. Such an honour. The last time we met was at the UFAF event in Vegas in 2019. I contacted Richard to say I’d love to be there and train with you again. Unfortunately the event was only open to UFAF members. Richard said “leave it with me.”. Shortly after he contacted me and said he had invited me as “his guest”. How amazing was that?. After confirming my place at the seminar with the UFAF we arrived at the South Point hotel and casino in Vegas. Whilst I was involved in another session within the event. Richard and Judy arrived and meeting my wife he asked where’s Stuart? We hugged and shared some fond memories before he had to meet Chuck and the other organisers and guests. During his seminar he showed a technique to the crowd and finally asked “Does anyone what to see that again?’. I put my hand up and that joy that came to his face was amazing. As I approached him he announced to the crowd.” This is Stuart, he’s come all the way from England to get his ass kicked by me!”. Everyone laughed and he did the move on me. Although being very welcomed by the UFAF already. Richard’s charm and tactics made us feel even more welcome. I was hoping to meet him again in Germany in September 2025 and enjoy our down to earth, enjoyable friendship. My sincere condolences go to Judy and his family and friends. He was like many will agree. A friend,an inspiration a true warrior who made everyone around him feel relaxed and honoured to know him. I know he up in heaven probably sharing stories with Bruce Lee,Ed Parker, Gene Labell,Joe Lewis and many other great martial artists that have left us. Rest in peace my brother and hope to see you in your Dojo up in heaven. Truly amazing human being and such a great loss.

  • Mick Roughan says:

The world grew a little darker when we received news of Richard’s passing. For the past 15 years or so Richard was an integral part of our world class stunt team, designing fight action and teaching actors how to look legit performing fight action. But more than that Richard and Judy became part of our stunt family as we travelled the world making major feature films. His legendary martial arts skills were only one facet of a man who was incredibly humble and hilariously funny. He and I were always pranking each other whilst working together. Judy also is a major part of that family as she and the other wives and girlfriends of our stunt team would travel with us and hang out keeping each other busy when we were working long hours. I can’t imagine the pain she must be feeling. Richard will never be forgotten and definitely owns a few chapters in my life book. We miss you already mate, I’ll catch you on the flip side mate. Rest Easy Brother

  • Leonardo Tenace says:

First and foremost my deepest heart felt condolences to Judy and Richard’s family and closest friends. I have been a student of martial arts and Zen do Kai for 43 years. In the early days living in regional Victoria I would only dream of being able to train with Soke Richard as it wasn’t an easy thing to do. Amazingly in the last few years after my own health battles, it was a dream come true that Richard was conducting seminars and training days and I took every single opportunity I could to do a training session with Richard and even more exciting, I had the honour to travel with him and the team to train Karate in Okinawa . Absolute dream come true . I can say with all my heart the loss of Richard is devastating. He was an absolute pioneer in every way in martial arts and he was an absolute super star human being . He answered all my questions I ever asked him, and he treated me always with respect even though he was 200 levels above me . That is a real warrior and gentleman. He was a one in a billion human being and martial artist. R.I.P Soke , I will endeavour to continue to teaching your way in your memory. Till we meet again , bless you and yours always in Bushido

  • Chris Mendonez says:

You made me laugh, smile and be a better person.
I will miss you as you gave so much. Your name will be always in our hearts.

Much love to Judy and Family.

You put ZDK on the world stage.

  • Lisa Sha says:

I have never been someone who follows celebrities, but hearing about Richard Norton’s sudden passing came as a shock and left me with deep sorrow.

Earlier this year, I had the honour of meeting his wife, Judy, at the Miss Australia Chinese Pageant in Melbourne. She is an elegant, warm-hearted artist, and her long-time friendship with our chief judge Beverley brought her to attend the event. On January 5th, I accompanied the contestants to a self-defence class at Richard’s martial arts academy. Judy told me she hadn’t been back there for a long time, and Richard rarely taught in person anymore. Yet, they both came that day—especially to support our initiative empowering women from within. It was truly moving.

February’s final event unknowingly became one of the last major public gathering Richard would attend in the Chinese community. He and Judy were not only highly accomplished artists but also deeply compassionate souls.

May Judy find strength and peace in this difficult time. And may you, Richard, rest gracefully in the light you so generously shared. Thank you for the power, protection, and kindness you brought to so many.

    With heartfelt gratitude,
    Lisa Sha

  • Jessie Shen says:

In Loving Memory of Richard Norton
    悼念Richard Norton先生:武魂传世,神德永存

At this sorrowful moment, we pay heartfelt tribute to a true master — Mr. Richard Norton, a Hollywood actor, Australia’s national treasure, and an internationally renowned martial artist and producer. His passing is not only a great loss to the world of action cinema, but also a profound grief shared across communities in Australia and beyond.

Richard dedicated his life to bridging martial arts and the performing arts, serving as a cultural ambassador between East and West through decades of collaboration with action legends across the globe. He was a living embodiment of the martial spirit — one of integrity, humility, and inner strength — and a powerful advocate for values rooted in Chinese philosophy: “刚柔并济, 以德为本” (strength and softness in balance, with virtue at the core).

We at La Moneta Foundation and I, Jessie, were deeply honored to have worked with Richard during one of his final community engagements — the 2024 Miss Australian Chinese Pageant. Despite his global status, Richard joined us with unmatched humility and heart, personally leading a women’s self-defense and empowerment workshop for our contestants.

With compassion and clarity, he taught not just physical techniques but the deeper power of believing in oneself, standing tall with dignity, and respecting others.
    He once said:
“True martial arts is not just about strength — it’s about helping people believe in themselves, to protect themselves, and to respect others.”
These words now resonate even more deeply.

His presence left an indelible mark on all who met him — especially the young women he mentored, who walked away not only stronger, but braver. Through his wisdom and actions, Richard helped revive and radiate Chinese cultural values on foreign soil.

Though he has left this world, his light endures. His legacy is not an end, but a beginning — a seed of empowerment and honor that will continue to grow in the hearts of many.

We will carry his spirit — his 武魂 — in all we do, as we continue our mission of women’s empowerment and cultural confidence.

Rest in peace, dear Richard Norton.
You are — and will always be — a legend we honor, a light we pass on.

    With deepest love and respect
La Moneta Foundation & Jessie Shen

Richard was a true gentleman and extremely generous. Richard had time for everyone and shared his knowledge both as a teacher and mentor. When he walked on set he elevated the cast and crew to the next level: a true professional. We are still in shock at your passing and send much love to Judy and the family.

  • Hayley Jones says:

The one and only Mr Richard Norton was a knight in shining armour when it came to kindness.
His spirit was a rare gem, illuminating the lives of everyone fortunate enough to cross his path.
I have never encountered a heart so generous, so open, and so willing to uplift others. In his presence, I felt an overwhelming sense of warmth and hope, a reminder that genuine compassion still exists.

In a single day, Richard performed what I can only describe a miracle, for a person like me.
He took my biggest dream—something I had held close to my heart for so long—and made it into a reality. It was as if he had reached into the fabric of the universe and pulled forth the magic that I thought had faded away.
His belief in me reignited a spark that had long been dimmed, showing me that dreams can indeed come true. His actions were a testament to the power of kindness, proving that one person can change another’s life in ways that are profound and ever-lasting.

As we mourn the loss of such an extraordinary friend and a remarkable man, I extend my deepest sympathies to his beloved wife, Judy, and to his extended family and close friends.
Richard’s legacy is one of love, hope, and unwavering support. He taught us all to embrace our dreams and to believe in the beauty of life, even in the darkest of times. Though he may no longer be with us, his spirit will forever echo in our hearts, reminding us to carry forward the light he shared.
Rest peacefully, dear friend. Your impact on this world will never fade.
We are all Richer for knowing you!
    Miss you mate…. 😢

  • Mal McRae says:

A fond memory meeting Richard at our house/dojo in Nunawading around 2005 after l invited Richard to view a dojo l had built. My wife made us lunch while we talked about mostly the arts. We went out into the dojo and l showed him some things l was experimenting with. We had coconut oil on his arms and body and he said he has now found a new way of preventing his restraint when l struggled to keep purchase on him. We had a great laugh about that. I felt l was in the presence of a very fine human being with an incredible knowledge of the martial arts. Over the years when l heard Richards name come up in conversation and there was many there was always a true love for this man and his achievements which shows how his martial arts helped shape his genuine spirit to all he met. Our condolences reach out to Judy and extended families his spirit will live on among those he has touched. Rest in peace Richard.

Deepest condolences to Judy and all of the Norton family and friends. It was and still is a shock to know that such a great, inspiring and humble man has passed away. Soke Richard’s legacy is vast and forever lasting to all those who have known him, trained with him or simply stood in his presence.
I first met Soke Richard in 1974 when I joined Zen Do Kai family in the Elizabeth St doco. First trained by my master Soke Bob Jones and then trained by Soke Richard. Even after 51 years I can still remember my focus on the teachings conveyed to me in those early inspirational years by Soke and Richard. We will all continue to carry the best of Soke Richard and respect the legend that he is and will always be.
Rest in lasting peace Soke Richard.

  • Dianne Taylor says:

You never know how much time you will have and I am so grateful that in recent years I was able to get to so many seminars and training days where Soke Richard was teaching as well as having the privilege of presenting my 3rd degree grading to him in 2021. His words and martial arts knowledge have left a lasting impression in my martial arts practice as well as how I teach. I am especially grateful for the wonderful time we all spent in Okinawa and the shared experience of learning in the birthplace of karate.
I am forever grateful for the opportunity to learn from Soke Richard and to witness his humility and openness and how he always made you feel seen and valued.
    Thank you 🙏

I could tell then l was in the presence of a very humble and experienced human being. He had coconut oil on his arms and we had a good laugh he had found a great restraining defence. I remember feeling very humble of his interest knowing he was such an accomplished individual. John Alford, Adelaide, 19/4/2025

It was a huge shock when I heard the tragic news on 30th March 2025 that, one of Australia’s greatest martial artists and wonderful human beings, Soke Richard Norton passed away.
My sincerest condolences to Judy and all the family – I’m so sorry for your great loss.
I was lucky enough to have been a friend of Soke Richard Norton since 2008, attended his seminars and was his uke in one of them. In February 2008, Soke Richard Norton conducted a seminar in Adelaide, South Australia. During his visit, I was fortunate to sit down with him for an exclusive interview in his hotel room.
Over the years Soke Richard and myself conversed over the phone and I was intending to bring him out to Adelaide this year for a seminar – very sadly this wasn’t to happen. I last spoke with Soke Richard late in 2024 and we had a wonderful conversation.
The loss to us all, most of all his lovely wife Judy, is truly tragic – to see such a wonderful person and one of the best martial artists that Australia has ever produced, pass away so suddenly is a great loss to us all. He will be dearly missed by all of us.
My sincerest condolences, thoughts and prayers are with you Judy, the family and all his closest of friends. RIP Soke Richard Norton.

  • Eric Breuer says:

I had the honor of not only training under Grand Master Norton several times at the Chuck Norris UFAF conventions in Las Vegas. But since I was a UFAF Regional Chairman for several years I was able to spend some personal time with Richard and Judy. Having been a CT. State Trooper during that time Richard and I spoke of not only Martial Arts but the demands of Personal Protection, as I was a member of the Connecticut Governor’s Security Detail.I do have to say the only thing Richard LOVED more than Martial Arts and Acting was his beautiful wife Judy. Even when discussing Martial Arts, Acting or Security, Richard was pining to have a private dinner or just be in the company of his Dear Wife JUDY. I leave you with this funny story : Sorry the year escapes me. We were all in Mr. Norris’ room at the Star Dust preparing to go out for dinner. Our wives gravitated to one section of the suite while we guys were just hanging out. There was Mike E. ( Chuck’s lawyer ), Me and then Richard to my left on the end. One of Eric Norris’ friend’s and sometimes stunt man Winston was standing to Richards left. Mike E. said to Richard that Winston said he was going to kick Richards butt. Without a blink of an eye Richard snap kicked Winston in the groin with such great control Winston slowly sank to his knees. Then was surprised he wasn’t even hurt. The shock of the sudden well placed kick was enough for Winston’s mind to think he should have been hurt, but wasn’t. Richard said to him….. Just in case you may have had that thought. LOL …….. Richard, I hope you were in Heaven 3 days before the devil heard of your passing. Rest Well Warrior.

This showed me how caring of others he was.

  • Alex Richter says:

It’s often said that some individuals live multiple lives within a single lifetime, and Richard Norton truly personified this notion. His life was a tapestry of remarkable achievements, each thread woven with passion and dedication. One could easily spend a lifetime mastering one of those pursuits, and Richard mastered them all.

From a young age, I was captivated by Richard’s career, first discovering him through Ric Meyers’ “From Bruce Lee to the Ninjas: Martial Art Movies.” Shortly after, I was mesmerized by his performance in “The Octagon,” and later immersed in his incredible Hong Kong action films. Little did I know that this extraordinary martial artist would also reveal himself to be one of the kindest and most generous souls I would ever encounter.

Last year, Richard expressed interest in being a guest on my podcast through a mutual friend. I was utterly astonished at the thought of having him on the show. When we finally arranged the recording, I felt a wave of nerves wash over me, as one often does when meeting someone who has inspired them since childhood. Even though our connection was through a Zoom call, Richard’s warm spirit and easy-going nature immediately put me at ease. It was astonishing to witness such humility in someone so accomplished and revered.

In the wake of his passing, I’ve reflected deeply on Richard’s legacy and the invaluable lessons he imparted. It’s evident from the tributes shared by others that my experience with Richard was not an isolated one. He will forever be remembered as a true gem in the worlds of martial arts and film—a realm that often lacks kindness. His legacy of generosity and warmth is something we should all aspire to emulate.

  • Nathan Jones says:

I was deeply saddened to hear of Richard Norton’s passing. I first met Richard on The Condemned, and we later spent eight months working together on Mad Max: Fury Road in Namibia, and more recently on Furiosa. Over the years, we shared a lot of time on and off set, and I came to know a man of incredible depth.

Richard had lived an extraordinary life. He often shared stories from his time as a bodyguard to rockstars…Fleetwood Mac, David Bowie, and others – and his travels alongside legendary actors. He kept us entertained with those tales, always with a twinkle in his eye and a joke on hand. But what really stood out was the wisdom he carried. It wasn’t just knowledge… it was lived experience, hard-earned and humbly shared.

Richard had a way of lifting the room…he made us laugh, he made us think, and he made us better just by being around him. He was one of a kind. To Judy and his loved ones, my heart goes out to you. Richard will be missed, but his legacy, his laughter, and his stories will live on.

    Rest easy, mate.

I met him for my first lesson in Karate at 48 Elizabeth St Melbourne. (Honbu) I trained under his careful guidance for years every night until I reached 1st Kyu. My Sensei was destined for higher calling and he moved into bigger martial arts circles. I followed his career and stayed in touch with him through social media. My career took me to University and teaching, I employed the methodology and philosophy of Richards teaching as the cornerstone of my approach to students. It never failed me and never failed my students. I also feel great sadness for our ‘Chief’ Bob Jones, who has to accept that an empty space now trains beside him. Sensei Richard Norton, thank you for making my life and the lives of so many, the better for having known you. Tomadachi.

  • Matthew Ball says:

You were a calming presence, you listened, even when you disagreed, as you gave space for other possibilities.

In the last decade you took on the role of the wise older brother for a generation of martial artists and actors. I was so lucky to be amoung them.

    Matthew and Kylie Ball

Thank you for your time, your wisdom, your laughter and for setting an exacting uncompromising standard.

I will miss you everytime I tie my belt.

  • Evan Bzadough says:

  • Alistair Macmordean says:

I was introduced to Richard, through my beloved friend Nathan Jones. At the time I was seeking to be mentored in the film industry to learn more about how to go about it.

To my surprise Richard invited me to his place several times to enjoy his friendship and hospitality. It was a humbling that someone of his caliber would even give me the time of day. But he did and I am so much richer in spirit for it.

I was starstruck as I remembered seeing him in his movies when I was a teenager. To me Richard was larger than life. They often say don’t meet your idols, otherwise you might be disappointed. However, I was blown away by his warm friendly manner, and his strong interest in myself and others journey in life in whatever we pursued.

I remember fondly him telling me all his adventures with Chuck Norris, Jackie Chan, David Bowie, Chopper Read and many more. Richard was an amazing orator with his deep enchanting voice and with enthusiasm he sometimes acted out fight scenes for me.

I remember him telling me after our first meeting that, that he looked back on all the successes and opportunities that came his way over his life and he wanted to help aspiring artists like myself to begin their journey.

When the time came to do my first short movie, Richard and his right-hand man Clint Harris helped the cast and crew with the fight scene. He brought an energy to the set, and it was then I knew from firsthand Richard’s loyalty and integrity in helping others.

Richard’s example was a challenge to us all, to dare ourselves to participate in the mat of life.

In a world of mediocrity Richard stood brightly and taller than the rest, always encouraging everyone to never give up on our dreams, and to always strive for excellence to become the best version of ourselves.

From the bottom of my heart I wish to thank you Richard for your friendship, precious memories and for being a positive role model.

There will never be another Richard Norton, he was unique.

His legacy will never be forgotten.

Richard you will be greatly missed and may you Rest In Peace.

  • Jillian Thomas says:

What a shock to learn of the loss of Richard
I originally met him over 30 years ago when he started dating my friend Judy.
Many times if Richard was filming Judy and I would go events, he always wanted to be sure she was not alone, that was just one if the many things he did. He always had this wonderful air about him to show you, you had his full attention and meant it. I have many stories however the one I remember most is Judy and I sitting on the couch doing a catch up. Richard came in the lounge and got his swords out and next minute they seemed to be wizing over our heads, Judy didn’t flinch, me very different. I said to Judy I hope we don’t get hit, she started laughing and said that would never happen he has done this thousands of times. Richard just continued.
Such a well respected and loved man who will be missed by many. Condolences to his family and friends. R.I.P
Much love and support to Judy.
    Xxx

An inspiration to many generations in the martial arts community. I had the chance to meet him personally about 15 years ago at convention and he was very humble and took the time to discuss the business and take some photos. He was an icon to me at a young age through his Hong Kong film work done with the likes of Jackie Chan and Cynthia Rothrock. He had something about him being the cool bad guy, to a kid wanting to be apart of the martial arts community. When he was on screen, his presence was felt.
I was hoping to have the chance to meet him once again through one of his seminars, but alas fate had other plans. My condolences to his family, friends and fans.

My condolences to Richard’s family at this saddest of times.
I first met Richard in 2006 at a martial arts conference. I already knew who he was from not only ZDK but his movies. Over the years he would come up to Qld to run seminars for my school.
One of my favourite memories was the first time he messaged me while working on the Gold Coast and asked if I wanted him to come up and teach classes for the night. This became a thing over the years and I loved not only the 2 hour car ride each way full of conversation but the dinner afterwards.
He was more than a martial arts superstar to me, he was a much valued friend.
    I will miss him greatly.

Richard Norton performance as the villian Kyo in the 1980 Chuck Norris film ” The Octagon ” was the reason why I begun martial arts…to have his friendship, train and share the mat and conversation many years later was surreal and one of my most cherished experiences. My deepest condolences to one of my best friends. He took me under his wing since 2006 and we have remained close all these years in both the martial arts and in friendship. His death was so sudden and very unexpected, and this has changed the way we think about death. I was lucky enough to call him earlier in the day just for a quick chat to discuss his Sydney itinerary the following day. He was more concerned about my health. Let’s not forget the incredible driving force behind Richard, Judy Green, because I know how important she has been during their time together. I am always hoping the phone will ring and I hope he can see the Norton legacy will continue. Will always luv you brother.

  • Brian Dixey says:

I’ve been a fan of Richard for 45 years and then in later years started to see him more as a mentor figure with his work ethic and code of honor. I’m very blessed, albeit in a smaller association, to know that I became someone he actually knew over the last decade or so. I’ve had a connection with him through mutual friends and the UFAF organization. We also got to spend sometime on a zoom call a little over a year ago with Cynthia Rothrock in which I was able to discuss with Richard about the topic of Bushido and living your life with respect both on and off the mat. He told me that his favorite quote was “It’s not the two hours on the mat that matter but also the twenty-two hours off the mat”. He was blessing to all who knew him. My sincere condolences from Boston USA to Judy and all of the family.
